Reading skills in math class

I came across a really interesting article today which proposes that "Mathematics has a reading protocol all its own, and just as we learn to read literature, we should learn to read mathematics." Most of the article consists of a dialogue between a strong mathematical reader and a weak mathematical reader as they work through a problem.

I was struck by the similarities between the reading skills we teach in English/Language Arts and those proposed by this article for mathematical fluency. Simonson and Gouvea emphasize the importance of questioning, metacognition, and constructing one's own understandings. This would be a great foundation for interdisciplinary work between English/Language Arts and Mathematics, two subjects for which I have a passion, but which I have had trouble bridging in the classroom.
