Google Sites
Why
Google provides an easy way for students (and teachers!) to publish webpages. You can use a Google site as a supplement to your SchoolFusion page (the user interface is a little easier), or your students can create sites as part of a project. At some point, I envision each of my students creating a website at the beginning of the year, and submitting it as a portfolio at the end to show what they have learned. Even though this technology does not teach students to use the intricacies of programming, it will help increase web literacy by lowering the barriers to entry. Asking students to publish sites to the web is also an authentic opportunity to discuss privacy and online expression, which are essential concepts for making responsible choices online.
Example
This page is where I go first every morning.
Last year, my sophomores made websites to host their rhetorical analyses of advertisements. Here's an example.
How
First, you'll need a Google account. Then go to http://sites.google.com, log in, and click on "Create Site." You're good to go!
